I was going thrue the Dominican Republic websites for a very good reason when I found this forum . We're planning, (7 of us, mom included) to sell everything here and move to this beautiful paradise hopefully before the end of 2007. I remember talking to Colleen's husband (Mark? I think from the pictures?) and him saying that it's not like when you come for a vacation! We'll have enough money to buy 3 maybe 4 x 1 bedroom appartments to rent for income, rent a house/villa with 4 bedrooms to live in for 2 years and have enough left for "problems". And of course aroud the Sosua area, Cabarete... The plan is not to get rich, but like you seem to be doing, have enough enough to live and have spare time to give to the community, volunteer work... Any information on; hints on how to buy a property, where to look, getting our citizenship, health/house insurance, the websites on long term rentals for house/villa are really hard to find, maybe someone knows where to look . If anyone has information that could help us achieve this dream, PLEASE reply! Thanks a bunch!!

Hi guys, didn't forget about you. Just ran into our first obstacle! I'm not the real father of my wife's daughter. Her real Dad doesn't really agree with us moving to paradise! He's concerned about the schooling and the safety of kids in the streets in Dominican Republic. He says that he'll go for a visit in the month of January 2007, to have a feel for the place.
We have now kind of planned for departure July 2007. I'm saying kinda because we all have to keep in mind that, we first have to get my wife's father to agree and my father doesn't have much longer to live and we want to be here when he goes. I'm not sure if I had already told you guys about my Dad, he's been slowly dying from a rare lung disease for 5 years now.
- I have now wrote a letter to the Dominican Embassy here in Ottawa, asking for any documents we have to fill out to get our citizenship (medical report needed, police report, credit report...?) I guess we need to first make sure all our paperwork is in order before selling everything here! I'll keep all of you updated on our progress as we go along.
Always good to here from you guys, we often check the weather over there....it's not fair!!

Hi Drak: Just want to let you know that in my opinion, think before liquidate your entire life to come here! You may get here and 6 months later find out it is NOT your Paradise! Not everyone finds that it is, and we have just seen yet another family leave and literally go back to nothing...after exhausting their savings. By saying this, I do not mean to alarm you- just remind you to keep your eyes open. The best thing you could possibly do is find something to rent or lease for the first 6 months or a year and you can start researching and looking to buy while you make your way! This is a wonderful, wonderful place, but it is not for everyone. And the only way you'll know is by trying. My advice? Dip your foot in the shallow end and wade in gently...don't just jump in the deep end- you could find the waters rather deep. Mark and I did just that- we took our time and have been here almost three years. But we didn't jump into anything and sat back for 7 months before we even went into business. There's no rush, this place isn't going anywhere- now may be the time to buy, but things will not change that much in 6 months. We would love to see you get here, and enjoy it without too much stress- it is a big step for anyone. Good luck plotting and schemeing, and we will all be here for you along the way to answer your questions when we can. Most of all, have fun- that's what life is all about isn't it??? Thanks for reading what I have to say. Cheers! Colleen

Hi Drako, Colleen is one of the smartess women I know, her advise is great and truthful. Coll, good on ya! wonderful advise. We are in the same position and are planning on making the DR our home one day. However, we are planning on going for a six month stint the first time just to see if it is what we think it is. We also have an ailing and elderly father in the picture and will not make our move until that time. We are planning on looking into apartments when we are here this time and will go from there.
I am sorry to hear about that family colleen, they must be devasted, any idea why they left. that would be good information for any one to know. without getting into particulars, especially if they had children involved.
GREAt ADVICE!!

FYI, it was the owners of Common Ground, Val and Robert- and we were heartboken to see them leave. Their son is staying, as is Peter who worked for them.
