Charity begins at home- where do you live, what charities do you support, local or otherwise? Is there a special reason you support a particular organization? Share here on this thread what drives you.

We have always given to the regular charities, but as time has marched on ( ugh which means we are getting older) things happen within your families. Our family has been affected by MS, diabetis, cancer and heart illness's. We now give to those charities for research purposes. We usually do some research on what the charity does and surprizingly enough each has a research component, this is what we now donate to.
Also, we are believers in making our community a better place to live, so any time something comes up we donate our time and efforts towards that. I believe that you make a difference in your community, it becomes a "home" and not just a community you get your mail in. It doesn't always mean a cash donation, but time as well. Whether that means you sit on a board, plant flowers, clean a park, run for city council etc. you do what you can. I have been so fortunate in my life to have a hubby who believes in me and supports me in what ever I take on. The funny thing is that he now gets involved as well, sometimes he does so kicking and screaming but in the end he is so happy he did. lol poor guy. But one thing we both agree on is the fact that if we can make a difference we do so.
What drives me, lol sometimes i think it it insanity! ( just kidding)

At home, we support the United Way in our city - I (Olivia) have also worked for them - as a Loaned Rep for Dow Chemical 3 times before I retired. I also volunteered there for a year thru a Dow retirees program. Just finished a one year maternity leave there as a paid employee as well.
I also am President of Beyond the Beach Children's Foundation and it in turn supports programs geared towards children in the Dominican Republic.... so far, DREAM Project in Cabarete and Mustard Seed in Puerto Plata..... we are investigating and will be adding another one in May when our Secretary/Treasurer Gregg is in the area!
We always stop by Checkpoint and support Sosua Kids as well with supplies and pesos....

I would like to give a big THANK YOU to Cin in Newfoundland. Beyond the Beach Children's Foundation is having a Fiesta in Orangeville, Ontario on July 28, 2007 to raise money for projects in the Dominican Republic.
Just had UPS deliver 3 boxes from Cin in St. John's, NL. In case you don't know, Cin & her fiancee run West Side Charlie's and as such, receive "freebies" from various vendors. Instead of keeping these items, Cin has boxed them up, paid the shipping and sent them to the Beyond the Beach Children's Foundation.
She is leaving it up to us to decide the best use for these items. Some will be used for the silent auction at the Fiesta and others will be used as door prizes for attendees.
A complete list of items will be posted on our website as soon as Wud can do it!
Cin & Todd - Thank you SOOOOO much from myself and the Directors.
Olive Thompson President, Beyond the Beach Children's Foundation
