I have some questions about accessing money specifically for Canadians staying in the DR for extended periods of time. There may be a chance some time in the near future for us to spend a month or two in the DR. But, I have no idea what to do about accessing money from home.
My current bank is not connected in any way to ATMs or banks in the DR. So, what bank(s) in Canada do you know of also have branches in Sosua/Cabarete where you can use your regular ATM card issued here in Canada to access money from home? I'd hate to set up a new bank account in Canada with some teller who has never travelled outside our country, then get to the DR and not be able to access my money.
This happened with my long distance calling card which I couldn't use in the DR at all, despite the local rep here telling me that "for sure" it was possible. In fact, couldn't even use the dang thing at Pearson Airport!
Or, should we rent a safety deposit box at a Banco and bring sufficient funds in Traveler's Cheques to keep in there, just cash them at a Banco when we need it? I don't like using credit cards. We'd need to have access to enough cash for at least a month or two, paying for our own meals and spending money.
Or, have someone at home wire us money every week via Western Union? I have no idea if that's possible or even safe.
You can PM me details, if you aren't comfortable disclosing your money accessing technqiues. Would appreciate hearing from you regular seasoned travelers to the DR and how you cope with the access to money from home issue.
