Hey, where'd everybody go? I finally found this great board to learn all about Sosua and suddenly everybody has disappeared for the last couple days! I hope it's just that everyone is having so much fun they don't have time for the 'puter. I have so many questions to plan for my trip this summer, but I'll submit them one or two at a time as I go through my planning checklist. First thing is to get a flight booked, so my first question is what airport is closest to Sosua. I'm confused whether it's Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata? I'm not sure yet whether I'll be travelling alone or with my daughter. If with my daughter, we'll probably stay at an AI, so hopefully there'll be a shuttle included. If I'm travelling alone, I'll be looking for something alot cheaper which may not include the transfer. Is there public transit between the airport and Sosua? Now that I've committed myself to make my first trip to the D.R., I 'm getting really excited about it being less than 3 months away! Really looking forward to exploring Sosua - and I can already taste those big juicy burgers at the Checkpoint! I saw a picture of one of Colleen's masterpieces and it made my mouth water! ...Rusty

Hey Rusty! We're still here! FYI- Puerto PLata airport is VERY close to Sosua (closer than it is to Puerto PLata, actually). A short and not too expensive taxi ride away. If you want to stay in town and do an All Inclusive look at Casa Marina Reef & Beach, Sosua Bay, and Sosua by the Sea. Breezes between Sosua and Cabarete, and also not a bad option (shuttles into Sosua thrice daily), but if you want to come to town often, Playa Dorada (has a lot of hotels in the complex) is further away and the taxi fare is much higher. Let us know what else you need to know!

Thanks so much for the info, Colleen! I see (on all the D.R. boards) that your pub is the place to go for good food and fun! Looking forward to meeting you and the hubby, and staff and regulars of Checkpoint. 2nd question: Are there any small hotels (or even a hostel) in Sosua that would be cheaper than the big resorts? I'm not very picky since I only go to my room to sleep, so as long as it's safe, clean and no bugs in my bed. (LOL) If my daughter is with me, we'll probably stay at a resort because she is quite picky and in a higher income level than me. And where ever I travel with my hubby we stay at the Hyatt because he works for them. But on my own, I’d rather stay at the cheapest place I can find and spend my vacation dollars on having lots of fun, good food, shopping, and tours. BTW, I saw on the website that you and Mark are Canadians. Where in Canada are you from?

Hello again, Rusty! We are from Vancouver- I grew up in Oliver, in the Okanagan Valley, and Mark grew up in the Simcoe/Port Dover area (north shore of Lake Erie). Are you thinking of a studio condo or something? Email me and I will get your dates and see if my friends have anything for rent when you are coming.

Hi Colleen, Still waiting to hear from my daughter in Florida as to whether she will be accompanying me. If so, probably leaning towards Casa Marina. If I end up vacationing alone, the problem with the big resorts is that they're all priced for double occupancy. Any advice for a single woman travelling alone?
