Hi All
Colleen has told me alittle about snorkeling from Sosua. I have some further questions.
Can you snorkel/ dive directly from The General's beach where Three Rocks is located? My wife and I snorkeled at Sosua years back, but she was a little intimidated by the fact that a boat took us some distance from shore and left us with the guide. This time, she would prefer to go in directly from the beach. If our kids want to snorkel, I think this would be better for them as well.
Are there any other locations/beaches in close proximity to POP and Sosua that we can snorkel to live reef directly from the beach? I'm thinking that I could convince my kids to stay on a bus or in a cab for about 45 minutes. Any further than that would get a little painful for all of us, if you know what I mean.
Also, where does the boat for Paradise Island leave from and how long is the boat ride out?
Thanks Again, Blair

Blair Yes you can snorkel at three rocks from the beach but access is dependent on the water. I spent a lot of time down there this winter as I love the solitude and my dog could run free without getting tourists wet or sandy. Depending on the surf you can walk down the beach right in front of the threee rocks. Colleen can tell you how to get down there once you are in Sosua. There is no vendors or shade at this beach so go prepared. It is a close walk as is everything if you stay in town. Where are you staying? I answered in another post and you can snorkell right from Sosua beach. Don;t forget the bread/ banana to feed the fish. My son can swim it easy I take his own life jacket from home then snorkelling bannan boating etc I have no worries. they did try once to put my son in adult life jacket and say " No Problem" So now we bring our own.
Linda at Mel's Tour can tell you all about the trip to Paradise Island. email her any questions you may have at meltours@gmail.com Have Fun

We're staying at the Holiday Village (the old Jack Tar) in the main resort area. We considered staying in Sosua but there's lots of kid stuff at Holiday Village. This will be the first time our kids have joined us on a vacation to DR, so we picked the resort that offered the most for them. And we can get a lift to Sosua when ever we want to do some great snorkeling! The way I see it, we'll have the best of both worlds for 2-full weeks! Can't wait!!!

When you say the main resort area Do you mean Playa Dorada?? Yes you can come come to Sosua anytime and we always travel by GuaGua or the occasional Publico. If you are adventurous the the Gua Gua is a must do. The kids love squishing in... and counting folks... our record is 23 adults 3 babies and a chicken. But it is not for everyone. Another economic way to travel( with 4) is to just rent a Publico taxi, Get a price for just your family no stops to pick up travellers. Much cheaper than a taxi. You will hav a blast as will the kids. I hope we happen to be around at the same time as Dylan is always looking for a playmate. Spending a day in Cabarete is fun too. While a wilder always fun and on a busy day there is so many windsurfers and Kitesurfers it is amazing. Something to see. Pack a soft sided cooler bag ( weighs nothing and takes no room) then on your days off resort you can take some water( freeze it if you can) and some snacks(the resort may make you a bag lunch, or scoop some fruit and bread at breakfast) saves $$ at beach. Send your money on Presidente and Banana boating. LOL I once again recommend bringing your own children's life jackets if they have them. Even on the resort if there is water sports ( kayaking, pedal boating, snorkeliing) It is nice not to worry. Ask away and I will try to answer as our son has made 7 trips to the DR, last year for 3 weeks so I have a little experiance with the kid thing. Robyne

Thanks for all your feednack again. Yes we are staying in the Playa Dorada area. Our trip days are Mar 15-29!! How would I go about getting a Publico taxi from inside the Playa Dorada area? I chat again in a few days. I'm going out of town for a few days of R and R.

You have to go out off the Playa Dorada Complex to get a Publico. Taxis you can get there everywhere inside the Playa Dorada Complex, but the Publicos are not allowed to drive to the hotels to pick up Tourists, but from Sosua back to the Playa Dorada you can get Publicos and they will drive you back to the Hotel, because to drop off Tourists at the Hotels is allowed . This sounds confusing, but that's how it is here....

Me thinks the taxi / publico situation re Playa Dorada has something to do with local union restrictions. Basically, the cheap forms of transport are not permitted to tout for business within Playa Dorada but are allowed to alight passengers there.

Copper- I believe what Linda was trying to explain is if you want to pay for a Taxi it will pick up and drop off "door to door"...while a "public taxi, aka Publico/Carro" will only pick up outside of Playa Dorada but they will be permitted to drop off inside Playa Dorada....make sense??
