Hi folks,
Just thought I would share some of the things or rather trips you can do while you are in the Dominican Republic. Most of these are available at your resorts.
We have tried them all over the past years, so I just thought I would share with you some of the highlights.
1. Samana (Barcardi Island) approx cost $55.00 US(depending which resort you are, the farther away the more money it will cost you)
You will make your way along the north coarst of the the island to Samana. Usually you pass through a rice field and coconut plantations, once there you will board a small boat that carries you across to Barcardi Isalnd,, or the castaway island of soft white sand, waying paln trees and clear aqua blue waters. Great for swimming, and good for the whole family to attend. Only draw back is long bus ride if you are closer to or on the other side of Puerto Plata. Included in this is breafast, boat ride, lunch and drinks. Ask your trip rep for more information.
2. Paradise Island- approx cost. is anywhere from 75to 100 US again depends on where your resort is located. This trip may also be called Punta Rusia.
Don't miss this one!! this is most idylic spon on the north-coast. Speed boats whisk you away to a fantastic desert island where white sand, turquoise waters are there to greet you. This natural sandbak bosts a courlorful coral reef and a deflighful sea to snokely in. There is an amazing array of bright colourful fish. You will then travel through the lush mangorves of the nationsla partk of Monti Christi. Included: bus trip, boats, lunch, and refreshments, all snorkeling equipment, and guide.
THIS IS A MUST DO!
3. White Water RAfting: approx cost$100 US,
If you are adventerous this is for you. You will be picked up at your resort and travel inland to Jarabacoa ( the village of flowers) along the way you may get to stop in Santiago for a short time. Sometimes you will get to tour the cigar and pottery factories on the way.
Once in Jarabacoa you will travel just a short distance to the Yaque del NOrte River, that passes through the canyon. It is a Category 4 rafting experience. Small falls and lots of bowls to go through, major rapids but great guides with instruction before you leave. The guide shoot the river with you and this is totally safe. A real blast!! Included: bus trip, refreshments, lunch and all safety equipment for trip. You can also purchase a picture photo book of your trip for an additional cost.
4. Free style Catamarans: approx cost 70 - 100 us. What a way to spend a day! you feel like a millionaire sailing away through the crystal clear water, you just need to relax, sit back, have a cool one and soak up the sun. The stop to snokel onve one fo the best reefs and have a lunch and open bar. If you don't like to swim this is not for you.
We loved it! Included; bus trip, life jackets, refreshments, snorkle equip,. and light lunch.
5. Out back Safari ( formally know as the rum runner)
approx cost 75-100 US. This is a favorite. this is a day when you will leave your hotel behind and discover the real tastes and sights of this fabulous country! You will travel down the dirt tracks and into the real Dominican. Take a short boat trip and try your hand at boogie boarding once you get to Caberate. Lunch is served at a crocodile farm and there is an open bar all day long. Fantasitc local guides will entertain you all day and this is the best way to see the country with verbal information supplied by the guides. We learnt so much this day. The company now sponsors a couple of homes and schools that you will visit. They do ask that you do not give out treats to the kids but if you bring treats or supplies that you give them directly to the teachers. This way they keep the kids in school.
This is a wonderful trip and I hightly recommend it.
Included: the big trucks pick you up at your resorts, lunch, boogie boards, bring a towel and wear your swim suits under your clothes. bring cameras and sun screen!
If you do no other tours this is the one to take!
6.Northern Lights tour: Approx cost $20-$50 US. this is the shopping fanatic tour. Shopping sight seeing, and a little sun bathing fills your day. The will take you to the Amber musien, San Felip Fort and the Brugal run Bottling plant, yo will end up on the beach of Sosua. Learn about the history and way of life in Puerto Plata and purchar some of their famous rum to take home. Included: bus trip, and lunch. Make sure you bring pecos to shop with. It is easier to shop with local currency on Sosua although they will take US, and be ready to barter. Also make sure you go up the steps at the end of the beach to the CHECK POINT Bar and Grill, have a cool one with your hosts Colleen and Mark!
This is a good trip and again you will see lots and learn about the DR>
7.Deep Sea Fishing trips: these will vary in price depending if you want to go for a full day or half days. be aware that it takes the boats about 2 hours to travel to where the big fish are, so if you go for a half day you only get one hour fishing. I would highly recommend Mels Tours for this. They are located right beside the Check Point Bar and Grill in Sosua. Ask for Linda she is great!
Inlcuded: transportation to boat, light lunch, refreshements, fishing tackle, you don't need a fishing license, life jackets, bait and experience crew.
Check out the prices at your resorts, but check out Mel's as well. The fish we got was a blue marlin, and mahi mahi. Great day. Beautiful boat!
8. Playa Grande Approx cost $65 - 100 US, depends again on where your resort is located. As its name suggests, it is one of the largest, most beautiful and unspoiled beaches on the island. You will visit a fruit plantation minutes away a short motor boat ride wil take you through the naturally formed tunnels of the mangroves swamps and out to sea on a calm day to see Swallow Cave. Included are' bus ride, lunch, boat ride, Caleton Beach.
this is a great way to spend a day! The beach is unbelievable, however there are other terrific beaches in the Dominican.
9.Helidosa- the helicopter ride, Approx cost;pricey and will depend on which location you are at. We paid $100 US per person but we did the long trip. There are about four different trips you can take and for different lengths of time. If you are going to do this one, make it worth your while and take the long one. Its a little pricey but you get to see the island from the sky and its a great way to see other resorts.
10. Ocean World: This is a fairly new attraction, there are two rates, one just for entry and one if you want to do the any of the encounters. There usually is good information at all the resorts. This is pricey but worth the money and a great thing to do with small kids or as a family group. Ask your tour rep at your resorts for the information.
Well folks that is about it for me. If you have any questions, that perhaps I can answer for you just leave me a message.
My personal favorite day would include: light breakfast, cab into Sosua and spend the afternoon shopping and touring Sosua's markets and little town, it is amazing the things you see. This is a safe little place to walk around and then of course a great burger and refreshments at the Check Point Bar. A great day.
If you are going to the Dominican to get the full experience become a little adventurous and get off the resorts and see what the Dominican has to offer. You will not be sorry!!!!
