Ok heres a question for all who may know: Are the cell phones in the Domincan on CDMA systems or GSM systems?

Hmmmm. what I DO know is that you can change SIM cards here or rent phones...I don't know what CDMA or GSM mean..... I am sure we'll be able to set you up so it doesn't cost you a fortune!

GSM (1800 / 1900) definitely OK - don't know about CDMA -
We got UK phone set up onto Orange Pay as you Talk - quick and cheap. Just have to wait a couple of hours after it is done for activation.

Thanks for the info, I don't think ours will work as we are on CDMA ( and I am not sure what that is just the hubby was asking- he knows about this stuff).
Can you use a VISA card on the pay phones down there??
Gosh I feel like a dumby asking all this but we have never been concerned about calling home before. This year we think we need to keep in touch a little more.

We got ours in the Orange shop near Banco Popular (1 minute from Checkpoint) - they may have to set your phone up - takes minutes then you have to wait a couple of hours before you can use it. We bought 300 peso cards and only used 2 in 5 weeks including calls to the UK.

You can also rent a cell phone/sim card from Orange so that might be an option as well!
