This might help the travellers coming to the DR. If someone could post the most recent exchange rate going for pesos. It might also be helpful to do this for Canadian and American and British pounds. Something like this: Canadain dollar = pesos American Dollar = pesos British pound = pesos Where is the best rate given etc. I still do not recommend changing your money on the street, There are bancos ( banks ) that give a pretty descent rate. Last time we got 30 pesos to the canadian dollar and the Americans were getting 33 pesos to their dollar. We could take out maximum of $500.00 Canadian a day, which is lots! usually lasted us about a week. Great exchange rate. Some of the resorts are exchanging money and are usually down about three pesos from the banks. Some resorts have ATM's but be careful as we have found that most don't work and you hear Menio)spelling? Which always means tomorrow, always tomorrow What is it now? ??

Go to a computer and click on XE.com to find the latest exchange. As of noon Eastern time the rates are as follows: CDN--28.69 DOM USA-- 33.7 GBP-- 65.4 While in Sosua I go to the ATM's on Pedro Clisante up by Super Super liquor store. I've never had a problem at any of them. Also there is an exchange place right at the Checkpoint beside Linda's Mel Tours office. Friends have told me they give the best exchange rate in Sosua. Hope that helps.

I checked a site called FXCheat Sheet and according to them as of today the Canadian dollar was worth $0.34 to the Dominican peso, do we dare to dream that this is true?

Also there is an exchange place right at the Checkpoint beside Linda's Mel Tours office. Friends have told me they give the best exchange rate in Sosua. Hope that helps. We stayed at Casa Marina in Sosua recently for two weeks, Dec. 20 to Jan. 3. Yes, Linda recommended the exchange shop next door to her. We got between 32.5 and 33 pesos per $1 USD. I think CAD was about 28 pesos. We only exchanged our money twice over two weeks. Casa Marina Reef & Beach receptions only gave 30 pesos per $1 USD, it never changed. CAD was about 25 pesos. Don't exchange money there. The banks normally give good exchange rate, too. The guys on the street wouldn't give us 32.5 and 33 pesos.

The day before we leave for the DR I download the FX cheatsheet, cut out the info and have it laminated. We can refer to it when thinking about buying something. We find it helps a bit. When I go to Sosua, I use the ATM's and usually take out 5000 pesos at a time. Today on XE.com, that would cost me 173.56 CDN but on Fx cheat sheet, it would cost 169.00. So whaddaya do? Take the cash and go for a beer, I guess.

Hi guys...some advice from one who lives here and has been here as a tourist- loosehead is right- the $$$ exchange by Checkpoint is one of the best in town...I changed some Euros there yesterday and got 43 to 1. Remember whatever you see online will be "realistic" as far as using your ATM card (it's your bank's exchange rate that is used), but here, do not expect the same rate. Today I got 33.70 for US and we got 26 for Canadian...which has dropped slightly. Exchanging on the "street" is fine if you use the same guy all the time, but most of the street guys work for the exchange places, so will offer less, as they have to make their buck, too. ALWAYS shop in Pesos here, do not use US for bartering with the vendors or you'll lose- the prices will go up if you use the US dollar. Do not change your cash or travellers cheques at your hotel- it's how they make money, therefor you'll lose 2-3 pesos per dollar...sounds small until you add it up!

Pay attention to Colleen. She knows whereof she speaks. I learned several years ago to use only pesos when shopping.
