I've just read in Sosua News about the rise in prices for beer and rum because of tax hikes. How much is this going to affect the prices at Checkpoint and other fine watering holes in Sosua? Just wondering

As a quick guide, Checkpoint is charging 80 pesos for beer [but in happy hour {5-8} Molson Canadian and Brahma are still 50 pesos]. As of today the local rum, gin and vodka remain the same although there may be a price increase in due course.
Other local bars are charging the same if not more for their beer.
Keep watching as the dust has not yet settled, and who knows, if the government realise they have got their sums wrong, they may well reverse or revoke this new tax

Holy sheep droppings, Batman!!! That's pushing 3.00 CDN for a Presidente. I'm going to be down there for 6 weeks so I'll have to rethink my socializing (ie: drinking) habits while I'm there. One of the many reasons my wife and I enjoyed the DR was the reasonable price of food and drink. The price of a beer in a bar in Barbados(a very expensive place to holiday) last fall was 5.00BAR which is basically 3.00CDN. I'd hate to see DR prices go that route.

Well, loosehead, it's a sign of the times, I am afraid- the beer companies got hit hard by tax increases, as well as tobacco. So far the liquor prices have not gone up, so our Happy Hour remains pretty much the same. We;ll keep you posted!!! Mom will love sitting by the pool drinking beer with you if you have to tighten the purse strings- we realize when you are here longer, your money has to go that much forther! No worries- we'll still party hard!!! See you in 21 more sleeps!!! Colleen

It's too bad when a beer at your local legion at home is cheaper than one in the DR. Actually the pub we go to here at home has beer prices the same as what they are now in Sosua. Adjustments will have to be made but not to worry, loosehead and the boss will be a presence at Checkpoint. I can also assure you that sitting by the poolwith arik2 will be no hardship at all. We are looking forward to it, to be sure.

Colleen, are you saying 50 or 58 pesos for a Presidente? What is that in Canadian. I am thinking that is still cheaper than here at home. Would I be right in that assumption?
Sincerely, mathematically challenged-Cat. My football helmut is off right now.

Spanky said on Jan. 6 that beer prices at the Checkpoint are now 80 pesos( for a Pesidente). As of this this morning, 80 pesos is worth 2.77 CDN. That is a bit more than I pay at my local pub in Midland. The legion here is just pennies more than 2.77. 50 pesos to 80 is a significant increase but it appears necessary because of the tax hike. Go on XE.com Mommacat and you'll be able to figure out what stuff is worth.

Momma- 5-8 PM are our Happy Hour hours! During other times, local beer is 80 pesos, which translates to 2.40 US for a beer. (just under 3.00 Canadian). As Loosehead points out, that's more than most Legions, but they get tax breaks, I believe- (we used to go to the Army and Navy Club in Vancouver, and it was CHEAP!) When I was home this summer in Vancouver it was just under 6.00 for a bottle of beer...so even though it brings the prices up here, most tourists won't even notice. Again, we're all waiting to see how it will affect liquor, wine, etc., so far no change....cross fingers!
